Los angeles coast rugby: A GLOBAL SPORT FOR AN INTERNATIONAL CITY

IS LOS ANGELES ABOUT TO BECOME THE LAS VEGAS OF EXPANSION TEAMS?

LA will soon have its first Major League Rugby (MLR) team. Dubbed "LA Coast Rugby", the team plans to make its debut in the 2019 season.

Since the International Olympic Committee announced that rugby would re-appear in the 2016 Olympics, the sport has rapidly gained popularity in the US. In recent years, rugby has actually claimed the title as the fastest growing sport in America. More than a hundred thousand players are registered with USA Rugby, and there are nearly 800 college teams.

By bringing the sport to Los Angeles, LA Coast Rugby founders Stuart Proctor and Patrick McCullagh aim to add to the city's sports renaissance. LA is ripe with talent, and youth rugby programs are continuing to increase in the LA Metropolitan Area. In 2017, Southern California Youth Rugby (SCYR) had the largest concentration of youth rugby players nationwide.
